We had the opportunity to explore Sanjay’s incredible journey with Standard Chartered and understand what makes this organization truly remarkable.

PerceptivX (PX) – How would you succinctly describe your organization, and what distinguishes its unique value proposition?

Sanjay Rughani (SR) – We are dedicated to fostering prosperity and hold ambitious goals to bolster global trade, support investment, and assist both companies and customers. We aim to cultivate growth, create wealth, and contribute to a more sustainable world. Through our distinctive presence in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, we seek to provide our customers and communities with opportunities for financial growth, enhancing their overall well-being and quality of life.

PX – What strategies have enabled your sustained advantage over competitors throughout the years?

SR – We utilize a multifaceted approach to consistently remain ahead and relevant in our industry.

Network – Our one-of-a-kind network enables us to facilitate investments, trades, and capital flows, with an increasing emphasis on sustainable finance. Our geographical reach serves as a bridge that connects Asia, Africa, and the Middle East to Europe and the Americas, helping our clients and communities overcome challenges.

Mass retail – We’re a global bank aiding individuals and small businesses in dynamic markets, fostering wealth management and business expansion. Our digital-first approach and strategic partnerships provide seamless banking solutions, with 85% of customers using our SC Mobile app for over 70 services. Collaborating with partners, we’ve launched the innovative SC Shilingi Funds, accessible through our SC Mobile app.

Affluent – Our affluent client continuum allows us to extend appropriate offerings to address clients growing and inter-generational wealth needs. As the leading international wealth manager, we offer our Affluent clients outstanding personalized wealth advice and exceptional experiences to help them grow and manage their wealth at home and internationally.

Sustainability – Being a purpose driven organisation, we continue to champion sustainability, our socio economic impact to Uganda is over 2% of GDP as per last review we did. On climate, we’re  supporting our clients and government the just transition decarbonizing and net zero journey through a multifaceted approach including mobilizing green finance, providing carbon reduction innovative financing, providing technical expertise and extending collaborative impact partnerships. We are committed to play a leading role in achieving sustainable future for the nation. 

Internally as a bank we are committed to achieve a net-zero status from our own operation by 2025 and we are progressing very well.  Additionally, as part of our corporate responsibility  our sustainability related initiatives include providing finance, networks, and training to empower youth and supporting companies in improving ESG standards. In 2023, our Future Makers program in Uganda has empowered over 8,000 women and youth, including 8% with disabilities, by enhancing their employability and entrepreneurial skills. As part of our net-zero commitment, we’ve planted 40,000 trees, contributing to future growth in trade, financing, investment, innovation, and sustainability for our clients and communities.

PX – What is your company’s stance on corporate social responsibility, and how are you actively contributing to giving back to the community?

SR – Our brand promise, “Here for good,” signifies our commitment to being a force for good in our communities. Our CSR initiatives focus on education for adolescent girls, providing work readiness and vocational training for youth (especially women and those with disabilities, offering training and financing for Micro and small businesses under entrepreneurship, and working towards reducing carbon emissions by 2050 through sustainable practices.

We also actively engage with partner NGOs for impactful community initiatives. In Kampala & Wakiso, our efforts empower over 500 marginalized individuals through Youth Empowerment, Entrepreneurship, and Decent Employment (YEEDE) initiatives. Additionally, we facilitate the placement of University & Tertiary graduates in Small & Medium Enterprises, providing essential masterclasses on audit readiness and financial literacy through the Challenges-Youth to Work in SMEs program. Simultaneously, our collaboration with Cordaid in the ongoing Youth in Agri-business initiative supports 600 youth through the Economic Recovery COVID-19 Initiative, offering access to finance sessions, business mentorship, digital marketing skills training, and a Ugx 200 million hardship grant for 152 youth in Lira and Nebbi districts.

PX – Could you share the narrative of your professional journey with us?

SR – Joining Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania in 1999 as Manager of Business Finance and Support, I later took on the role of Regional Finance Manager Africa in the UK until 2001. In my diverse career, I’ve held senior positions across multiple markets, including Finance Director for Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania, Executive Director, for Finance in Ghana, and Area CFO for Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Cote d’Ivoire.

Before becoming the CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania, I served in various leadership roles, such as interim Head of the Global Finance Shared Services Centre in India and Head of Finance Operations & Change Management for Africa. 

Additional I have held significant corporate governance roles including being current Chairman of Professional Accountants in Business Advisory Group (PAIB AG) of International Federation, Non-Executive Director for TradeMark Africa, Trustee for Standard Chartered Bank Benevolent Fund (TSCBBF). My past key governance representations included being Chairman of CEO Roundtable Tanzania, Deputy Chairman of Tanzania Bankers Association (TBA), Executive member of Tanzania National Business Council (TNBC), Director of Association of Tanzanian Employers (ATE), President of Lincoln Community School(International School in Ghana), Chairman of Ghana Business Coalition against HIV & AIDS (GBCA) and Director Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) 

PX – Do you believe in a winning formula for successful leadership, and if so, what’s yours?

SR – Absolutely, I firmly believe in a winning formula for leadership. My approach centres on unlocking both leadership and human potential within our organization and externally. I’m committed to driving client value, optimizing organizational efficiency, and strategically contributing to national impact. Adapting to the dynamic market, leading innovation, and building strong value networks and relationships are integral to my leadership style. Moreover, I prioritize cultivating an inclusive workplace, fostering diversity and collaboration. By being different in these dimensions, I aim to make a positive and meaningful impact, not only within our organization but also in the broader context of societal and national well-being. 

PX – How do you mitigate uncertainties in the face of dynamic market conditions and unpredictable external factors?

SR – To minimize unknowns effectively, I employ strategic planning, data evaluation, transparent communication, and a proactive mindset, supported by our bank’s global model. This includes thorough risk assessment, scenario planning, and regular updates to anticipate developments. A continuous learning mindset and industry trend awareness reduce surprises. Building a versatile team with strong risk governance, change agility, innovation, and cross-functional collaboration enhances our ability to navigate uncertainties. Strong external relationships offer valuable insights into potential disruptions. 

PX – In the realm of business leadership, what according to you constitutes the essential mantra for success in today’s dynamic and competitive environment?

SR – Successful leadership demands sacrifices, including extensive time commitment, balancing personal and professional life, making financial trade-offs for organizational growth, and navigating the emotional toll of decision-making for the greater good. As a leader, I embrace discomfort as a catalyst for growth, particularly in unfamiliar situations. My approach involves prioritizing continuous learning, effective delegation to a competent team, open communication, and reframing challenges as opportunities for innovation.

PX – What are your interests and passions outside of your professional life?

SR – Outside work, I find joy in simple pleasures, prioritizing quality time with loved ones. Football is a passion, with allegiance to Liverpool FC and Barcelona FC. I stay engaged through diverse reading, connecting with the younger generation, and continuous learning. Travel inspires me, offering fresh perspectives, and coaching leaders align with my belief in mentorship. Networking is integral, fostering personal growth and expanding collaborative opportunities in life’s pursuits.

PX – What are the areas of expansion or strategic focus that you envision for your company in the coming years?

SR – Our strategic focus revolves around client-centricity, digital innovation, sustainable banking, and network optimization. We prioritize meeting client needs through advanced digital platforms, offer diverse financial products, and are committed to sustainability. By optimizing our global network, we aim to drive revenue growth both physically and digitally. In wealth management, disciplined approaches and global investment opportunities are key.

PX – What legacy do you anticipate leaving behind, and how will the success of your company contribute to its realization?

SR – My legacy centers on unlocking leadership potential and fostering positive change. By championing innovation and ethical leadership, I aim to ensure the company’s sustained influence. My commitment to talent development, global collaboration, and societal contributions underscores a broader impact. Ultimately, I aspire to leave a lasting imprint, positively shaping the organization’s future not only in financial achievements but in making lasting meaningful difference in the communities we serve.
